University Avenue Campus Plan updates include new dormitory and playground construction

In a recent public hearing held by the DC Office of Zoning, significant developments regarding the Wesley campus plan were discussed, highlighting a shift towards enhanced landscaping and student housing. The meeting, which took place on May 12, 2025, focused on the elimination of a proposed administrative building and the introduction of a new playground, reflecting a commitment to community engagement and environmental sustainability.

The proposed changes include the demolition of the president's house, which will be replaced with landscaping and a playground accessible via a new sidewalk along University Avenue. This initiative aims to create a more inviting atmosphere for students and residents alike. The updated Green Area Ratio (GAR) calculations indicate a commitment to increasing green space on campus, with a target of 0.6, surpassing the required 0.4.

A key point of discussion was the adjustment of the student cap from a full-time equivalent model of 715 to a headcount of 1,000. This change, according to officials, does not represent an increase in student impact on the campus, as many students participate in part-time programs that do not require regular campus attendance.

Architectural plans for a new dormitory were also unveiled, showcasing a five-story building designed to blend with the existing campus structures. The design has evolved through community feedback, with efforts made to reduce visibility from University Avenue by stepping down the building's height and increasing setbacks. The new facility will provide 659 beds, with a net addition of 569 beds, and will incorporate sustainable features such as a green roof and solar panels.
