Ponca City High School's esports team made a striking debut this season, showcasing their competitive spirit and talent under the guidance of coach Ian Rand and STEM director Alicia Smith. The Wildcats, in their inaugural year, have already made waves in the Oklahoma esports scene, with the Overwatch team finishing second out of 15 teams and the Rocket League team securing fourth place among 13 competitors.

Both teams demonstrated impressive skills, advancing to the playoffs where the Overwatch squad clinched third place and the Rocket League team took fourth. Their success has earned them a spot in the upcoming state competition in Bixby, where they aim to bring home a coveted gold ball for Ponca City.

During the recent school board meeting, the achievements of these young athletes were celebrated, highlighting their hard work and dedication despite facing teams with more experience. The board recognized players from both teams, including Overwatch members Carson Lund, Elizabeth Burdick, Jackson Barnard, Robert Watkins, and Jackson Holloman, along with Rocket League captain Julian Aguilar and teammate Connor Furnace.

As the Wildcats prepare for their state competition, the community is rallying behind them, eager to see how they will perform on this larger stage. The enthusiasm surrounding the esports program marks a promising start for future seasons and the growth of competitive gaming in Ponca City.
