A new employment program aimed at helping marginalized populations in St. Croix County is set to make waves in the community. During a recent meeting of the St. Croix County Community Justice Collaborating Council, program representatives outlined their comprehensive approach to assist individuals facing significant barriers to employment, including those with criminal records, substance abuse issues, or lack of transportation.
The program is designed to be person-centered, focusing on connecting participants not just to jobs, but also ensuring they maintain their employment long-term. "We partner with participants to identify barriers and create step-by-step plans to overcome them," a program representative explained. This hands-on approach includes regular meetings—often once or twice a week—to establish goals and provide support.
The program consists of three phases: an initial orientation, an ongoing orientation, and the employment phase. In the first phase, participants receive assistance with job applications, resume building, and interview preparation. The ongoing phase emphasizes accountability, with staff helping participants actively search for jobs and follow up on applications.
Once participants secure employment, the program continues to support them by checking in weekly and maintaining communication with employers to ensure a smooth transition into the workplace. This holistic approach not only aids individuals in finding jobs but also helps employers by fostering a stable workforce.
Transportation remains a significant barrier for many potential participants. To address this, the program offers gas cards, bus passes, and ride vouchers. Additionally, it provides essential items like cell phones for communication and work attire to ensure participants present themselves well during interviews.
As the program gears up for implementation, its leaders are optimistic about building partnerships within the community to enhance its effectiveness. The initiative aims to empower individuals and create a more inclusive workforce in St. Croix County, ultimately benefiting both participants and local employers.
