Town discusses implementing electric vehicles and charging infrastructure for public safety

Cranford Township is considering a budget proposal that maintains funding levels from the previous year while introducing key enhancements aimed at improving local services. During the budget meeting held on February 22, 2025, officials discussed the need for slight increases in funding for essential services, including equipment licensing and part-time staffing, reflecting adjustments for minimum wage increases.

A significant highlight of the meeting was the proposal to acquire an electric vehicle (EV) for the township's operations. Currently, staff members are using personal vehicles for work-related tasks, which raises concerns about liability and safety. The proposed EV, a police version of the Chevy Blazer, is seen as a practical solution that could reduce maintenance costs and fuel consumption. The vehicle's design allows for extended idle time without burning gas, making it an efficient choice for various township duties.

Funding opportunities from PSE&G and state programs could cover up to $30,000 for infrastructure improvements, including charging stations at town hall. The proposed charging units would enable quick recharging, providing 60 to 70 miles of range in about half an hour. This initiative not only aligns with sustainability goals but also positions Cranford to take advantage of available financial resources while they last.

In addition to the EV discussion, the meeting touched on the importance of maintaining the township's communication capabilities, with a request for increased funding for Verizon services, which have proven beneficial for local broadcasting efforts.
