Major Caleb Blankenship addresses Buncombe County Schools top scholars on leadership

Under the warm glow of the auditorium lights, a sense of anticipation filled the air as Major Caleb Blankenship took the stage for the 2025 Top Scholar Celebration in North Carolina. Introduced by his former teacher, Major Blankenship, an Owen High School graduate, shared his remarkable journey from the valleys of Asheville to the halls of military leadership. His story began with a strong foundation in his hometown, where he excelled as student body president and a dedicated athlete, all while balancing academics and part-time jobs. His teacher, Mary Julian, recalled his unwavering focus on the future, driven by a sense of duty to his community and country.

After graduating from West Point in 2005, Blankenship embarked on a distinguished military career, serving in various leadership roles across Europe and earning multiple advanced degrees, including from Harvard University. His current role as a speechwriter and special advisor to the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff highlights his commitment to service and leadership.

In his address, Blankenship emphasized the importance of community support in achieving success. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the students, particularly the impact of a devastating hurricane that disrupted their lives. Yet, he praised their resilience and the collective efforts of the community to rise together in the face of adversity. “Together We Rise,” the theme of this year’s celebration, resonated deeply as he recounted stories of neighbors helping neighbors during tough times.

As he spoke to the top scholars, Blankenship encouraged them to reflect on their futures and the kind of leaders they aspire to be.
