Excitement is building for the City Arts and Sciences Academy (CASA) as it gears up for its opening this fall. Principal Chris Norkin shared thrilling updates during the Lynn School Committee meeting, highlighting a surge in student enrollment and innovative educational initiatives.
Since taking the helm on April 1, Norkin has exceeded initial enrollment goals, reporting 237 students with 48 new applications pending. The interest spans multiple grades, particularly seventh through eleventh, indicating a growing buzz around CASA's unique project-based learning approach. "The energy from the students is incredible," Norkin noted, emphasizing the enthusiasm of incoming eighth graders eager to engage with the curriculum.
CASA is set to offer a dynamic learning environment, with a focus on STEM education and community involvement. Norkin outlined plans for professional development events, including a STEM pop-up event in June, aimed at enhancing teacher capacity and fostering collaboration among families and students. Partnerships with local organizations, such as the Lynn Music Foundation and Raw Arts, are also in the works to enrich the educational experience.
The staffing plan for CASA is robust, with 25 positions allocated to support 300 students, including specialized teachers for English language learners and students with disabilities.
