During the recent Regular City Commission Meeting in Deerfield Beach, representatives from the Kiwanis Club presented a heartfelt request for permission to place donation boxes at five city locations for their annual "Christmas in July" project. This initiative aims to support local homeless children by providing them with essential back-to-school supplies.
The Kiwanis Club, along with 24 other clubs in Broward County, has committed to distributing approximately 7,000 backpacks filled with clothing and school supplies to children in need. This year, the school board reported a staggering 6,018 homeless children registered in the local school system, highlighting the urgent need for community support.
The donation boxes will allow residents to contribute items such as jeans, underwear, socks, toiletries, and school supplies. Each backpack is tailored to the individual needs of the children, ensuring that they receive new items that fit properly, allowing them to start school with dignity and confidence.
The Kiwanis representative emphasized the importance of this project, stating that it not only provides necessary supplies but also fosters a sense of belonging among the children. The organization encourages community members to visit their website for more information on how to contribute, whether through monetary donations or by providing clothing and supplies.
The proposed donation sites include the Johnny Tigner Center, the West Community Center, Waste Management at the city site, and City Hall. The city manager has been provided with a list of these locations to facilitate the initiative.
This meeting underscored the collaborative efforts within the Deerfield Beach community to address the pressing issue of child homelessness and ensure that every child has the opportunity to start the school year on a positive note. The commission's approval of the donation boxes will be a significant step in supporting this vital cause.
