Kent County honors Dakota Collison and recognizes Correctional Employees during special ceremony

The Kent County Commissioners meeting on May 6, 2025, highlighted significant community acknowledgments, including a tribute to fallen service member Dakota Collison and the celebration of Correctional Employees Week.

The meeting began with a moment of silence for Dakota Collison, a U.S. Navy member and volunteer firefighter from Rock Hall, who was honored as he returned home. Commissioners urged the community to keep Collison and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Following this tribute, the commissioners recognized the dedication of correctional staff at the Kent County Detention Center. They presented the "Correctional Officer of the Year" award to Sergeant Charles Dobson Jr., who has served the facility for 23 years. Dobson was commended for his exemplary service, strong work ethic, and commitment to safety within the detention center and the surrounding community.

In conjunction with this recognition, the commissioners proclaimed May 4 through May 10, 2025, as Correctional Employees Week. This designation honors the vital role correctional employees play in maintaining safety and order within the community. Commissioner Albert Nickerson emphasized the importance of acknowledging the often-overlooked challenges faced by these professionals, who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of both incarcerated individuals and the public.
