During the recent Medical Lake City Council meeting held on May 7, 2025, significant discussions centered around the approval of funding for new sports field lighting and related infrastructure improvements following a recent fire incident. The council unanimously passed a resolution to award a contract to Triumph Electric for the installation of new bulk field lights at a cost of $226,748, which is part of a larger project necessitated by the loss of four poles in the Gray Road fire.
The funding for this project comes from the Washington Cities Insurance Authority (WCIA), which provided $272,230.37 to cover the damages. However, the council is faced with a potential budget shortfall, as the total estimated cost for the project, including additional upgrades, could exceed the insurance payout. The proposed enhancements include the installation of 58 recreational hookups along pathways to facilitate food vendors during community events, which would alleviate the need for permits and reduce logistical burdens for vendors. This addition is estimated to cost $16,646.
Further discussions revealed that upgrading the electrical panel from 200 amps to 400 amps would incur an additional $7,721, while enhancing the lighting from 30-foot to 50-foot poles would add $17,616. Collectively, these upgrades could push the total project cost to approximately $293,000, which is about $20,000 over the insurance funds received.
Council members expressed the need to determine how to cover this budget gap, with suggestions pointing towards utilizing the detox agreement fund, which is sourced from the general fund. The council is also considering the balance in the parks improvement fund to assess available resources for this project.
The meeting highlighted the council's commitment to improving community facilities and supporting local events, while also navigating the financial implications of such enhancements. As discussions continue, the council will need to make critical decisions regarding funding allocations and project scopes to ensure the successful completion of these improvements.
