The Marana Unified School District (MUSD) celebrated outstanding contributions to education during its recent board meeting on May 8, 2025. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of exceptional staff members who have made significant impacts in their schools.

Alicia Johnson, a behavior interventionist at Butterfield Elementary School, was honored as the Support Staff of the Year. Over the past two years, Alicia has dedicated herself to enhancing student behavior support on campus. Her innovative strategies, including the creation of a "chitchat table," provide students with a welcoming space to take breaks and engage in structured activities. This initiative has transformed how students manage conflicts and self-regulate their behavior, fostering a culture of empathy and understanding at Butterfield. Alicia's collaborative efforts with teachers to develop individualized support systems have strengthened partnerships among staff, students, and families, significantly enhancing the school's capacity to support all learners.

The board also recognized Val Ramirez as the Teacher of the Year. Val has been a dedicated educator in the district for 11 years, known for her enthusiasm and commitment to her students at Rattlesnake Ridge Elementary. She has a remarkable ability to create a safe and supportive classroom environment, especially for students with special needs. Val's dedication extends beyond her classroom as she actively participates in grade-level interventions and supports younger students in making positive behavioral choices. Her selfless leadership and strong relationships with students, colleagues, and families have made her a beloved figure in the community.

Additionally, Dan Contorno was acknowledged as the Administrator of the Year. As the chief financial officer, Dan has been with the district since 1992, contributing his expertise to ensure the financial health of MUSD.
