New Bedford City Council approves Eversource overhead transmission line expansion

The New Bedford City Council convened on May 8, 2025, to discuss several key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the city's electrical system reliability. A significant focus of the meeting was a series of public hearings regarding the installation of overhead conductors by Cornerstone Energy Services on behalf of Eversource Energy.

The proposed projects include the installation of 100 feet of overhead conductors on Flaherty's Drive, 200 feet on Duchesne Boulevard, 70 feet on Phillips Road, and 60 feet on Acushnet Avenue. These installations are part of a broader effort to extend a 115 kilovolt transmission line from Acushnet to Fall River, which is expected to improve the overall reliability of the electrical system in the region.

During the public hearing, representatives from Cornerstone Energy Services assured council members that the work would not involve any construction on the land or within the right-of-way, minimizing disruption to residents. The overhead lines will be positioned 47 to 60 feet above the roads, and while some tree trimming may be necessary, no major tree removal or wetland work is anticipated.

Councilor Morad raised concerns about traffic management during the installation, particularly in busy areas like the Business Park. In response, the council voted to amend the orders to require police details at major intersections during the work, ensuring safety and minimizing traffic disruptions.

In addition to the infrastructure discussions, the council also addressed a communication from Mayor Mitchell regarding the hiring of an assistant superintendent of water/plant manager. The council moved to refer this matter to the finance committee for further consideration.
