During the recent Pomona Unified School District Board meeting held on May 7, 2025, the achievements of local students were celebrated, highlighting the district's commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.
The meeting opened with a recognition of the district's participation in the Los Angeles County Math Field Day, where 20 students from grades 4 through 8 represented Pomona Unified. Notably, the fourth-grade team from Pantera Elementary School earned third place in conceptual understanding, while the eighth-grade team from Laurier Middle School not only secured second place in sense-making but also achieved the prestigious title of overall champion for their grade. This marks a continuation of success for the district, as both teams had also won medals in the previous year.
In addition to academic accolades, the meeting featured the Doctor Perlman and Mr. Wong Awards, which honored students for their submissions recognizing local heroes. This initiative aimed to celebrate individuals who inspire and uplift their communities, echoing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Several students were acknowledged for their thoughtful nominations, with Lisonbee Tao from Pantera Elementary taking first place for her impactful writing.
These recognitions not only showcase the talents of Pomona Unified students but also emphasize the district's role in fostering a sense of community and encouraging civic engagement among its youth. The board's commitment to celebrating student achievements reflects a broader goal of promoting excellence and inspiring future generations. As the district looks ahead, continued support for such initiatives will be crucial in nurturing both academic and personal growth within the community.
