Indianapolis Parks and Recreation is set to receive a significant boost with a $2 million investment aimed at enhancing facilities and amenities across the city. This funding, which constitutes over 30% of the annual capital improvement plan (CIP), will support a variety of projects designed to improve the quality of parks and recreational spaces.

The largest allocation of this funding, $900,000, will be dedicated to upgrading basketball, tennis, pickleball, and futsal courts at 60 locations within 28 parks. These improvements will include new striping, surface repairs, and the installation of new netting and goals, ultimately enhancing the playing experience and extending the lifespan of these facilities.

Additionally, the plan includes a bulk purchase of site amenities such as picnic tables, benches, and trash cans, aimed at improving park aesthetics and reducing litter. A further $249,000 will be allocated for landscape maintenance, ensuring that parks, especially around family centers and pools, receive regular upkeep.

Other notable projects include a one-time investment to replace the lighting system at Ellenberger Park's tennis and pickleball courts, a $150,000 HVAC replacement at the historic Garfield Park Conservatory, and modernization of interior fixtures at various family centers and pools.

The committee also discussed potential grant opportunities to further support these initiatives. Collaboration with organizations like the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the Parks Alliance is underway to identify funding sources and assess the needs of the park system.

These improvements are expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for Indianapolis residents, providing better recreational facilities and a more enjoyable park experience. The Parks and Recreation Committee emphasized the importance of these investments, which are crucial for maintaining and upgrading the city’s recreational infrastructure.
