Braintree's Thayer Public Library is set to receive continued support as the town council reviewed the proposed fiscal year 2026 budget during a recent meeting. Library Director Terry Stano presented the budget, emphasizing its alignment with state aid certification standards, which aim to enhance public library services and encourage community support.
Stano highlighted the library's significant achievements over the past year, including a 44% increase in program attendance and a 52% rise in the use of electronic resources. The library celebrated its 150th anniversary with diverse programs and has undertaken a comprehensive space needs assessment to better serve the community. Additionally, new exterior lighting has been installed to enhance safety and accessibility for evening visitors.
Despite these successes, Stano expressed concerns over anticipated challenges due to federal funding cuts, particularly from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). These cuts have already impacted the library's resources, including a denied grant that previously supported access to essential research databases.
Community support remains strong, with patrons sharing personal stories about the library's importance in their lives. Stano reiterated that the library is not just a place for books but a vital community hub for learning and connection.
The council recognized the dedication of the library's board of trustees and expressed commitment to ensuring the library continues to thrive as a crucial resource for Braintree residents. As the budget discussion progresses, the focus will remain on maintaining and expanding library services in the face of funding challenges.
