Des Moines schools tackle chronic absenteeism with new student support strategies

Chronic absenteeism emerged as a critical issue during the May 6, 2025, Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) Board Meeting, with leaders emphasizing the need for a compassionate approach to address the underlying causes of student disengagement. The introduction of a "house" structure for ninth graders aims to provide more personalized support by allowing teachers to collaborate across disciplines.
