Henry County is set to enhance public transportation with the launch of its first local bus route, connecting key community destinations between Stockbridge and McDonough. The Board of Commissioners approved the pilot bus route during their meeting on May 6, 2025, marking a significant step towards improving mobility for residents.
The new service, named Henry Connect, is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025. It will operate Monday through Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM, offering a convenient two-hour round trip with an estimated one-way fare of $2.50. The route will connect major locations, including McDonough Square, Stockbridge City Hall, Piedmont Henry Hospital, and Stockbridge Park, serving over 23,800 residents and 9,000 jobs within a half-mile of the planned stops.

This funding will cover initial capital costs of approximately $850,000 for stops and signage, as well as an annual operating cost of about $650,000. The project aims to provide essential connections to medical services, government offices, and retail destinations, thereby expanding access for those who rely on public transportation.
In addition to the bus route, the county is implementing a creative placemaking plan for bus stops, incorporating public art that reflects the local community's character. This includes designs inspired by the historical architecture of McDonough and the vibrant arts scene in Stockbridge.
The Board emphasized the importance of safety, particularly regarding lighting at bus stops and crosswalks for seniors and other riders. Plans are in place to ensure adequate security measures, including lighting and potential surveillance at bus shelters.
As the county prepares for the launch of this vital service, officials are optimistic about its potential to reduce traffic congestion and improve access to essential services for residents. The pilot route is just the beginning, with additional routes planned as part of a broader transit master plan aimed at enhancing connectivity throughout Henry County.
