Marin County has officially proclaimed May as CalFresh Awareness Month, a significant step aimed at increasing participation in the state's supplemental nutrition program. During a recent government meeting, Health and Human Services officials highlighted the program's successes and ongoing challenges, emphasizing its vital role in supporting local families and the economy.

Carrie Bierman, the Social Services Director, reported a remarkable 87% increase in CalFresh enrollment since 2019, with over 16,000 individuals currently benefiting from the program. This surge is attributed to enhanced outreach efforts and community partnerships, which have helped dispel myths surrounding eligibility. For instance, many older adults and immigrants remain hesitant to apply due to misconceptions about the program's requirements and potential impacts on their immigration status.

Despite these successes, the program faces significant threats, including proposed federal budget cuts and potential changes to eligibility requirements that could restrict access for many families. Concerns were raised about the possibility of lowering income limits and increasing work requirements, which could disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.

To combat misinformation and improve access, the county has ramped up outreach initiatives, participating in over 50 community events last year. The goal is to target families with school-aged children and older adults, ensuring they are aware of the benefits available to them.

Officials are optimistic about the future, aiming for a 5% increase in enrollment among older adults and continued growth across all demographics.
