Marin County has officially proclaimed May 2025 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a significant recognition of the contributions and resilience of these communities. The resolution was adopted during a recent Board of Supervisors meeting, where members of the Marin Association of Asian Public Local Employees (MAPLE) shared personal stories and cultural insights, emphasizing the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Ashley Green, co-president of MAPLE, opened the meeting with a traditional oli, highlighting the need for ongoing awareness and education about AANHPI cultures. She noted that MAPLE, established 12 years ago, aims to create safe spaces for employees to celebrate their heritage while advocating for greater representation in county leadership roles.

Sabrina Cardoza, MAPLE's treasurer, addressed the theme of belonging, urging county leaders to empathize with the challenges faced by employees, including fears related to immigration status and social justice issues. She called for open dialogues and support for affinity groups, which play a crucial role in fostering community and belonging.

The meeting also featured a resolution that acknowledged the historical significance of May for the AANHPI community, marking both the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad and the anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The resolution emphasizes the county's commitment to racial and social equity, recognizing the vital roles AANHPI individuals play in various fields.

Public comments during the meeting reinforced the need for continued advocacy and support for marginalized communities. Speakers highlighted the importance of acknowledging historical injustices and the ongoing struggles faced by various ethnic groups, including the impact of current events on community cohesion.
