Residents of Gallatin voiced strong opposition to a proposed zoning change during a recent city council meeting, highlighting concerns over density and community impact. The proposal seeks to change zoning from R15 to mixed-use, which critics argue would increase density fivefold compared to adjacent homes.
One resident passionately expressed that the new development would be "2 and a half times denser" than a nearby neighborhood that recently sought a waiver for smaller lots. The proposed commercial property, which would be built close to residential backyards, raised alarms about potential disruptions, including commercial lighting and increased traffic.
"This doesn't fit the surrounding neighborhoods," the resident stated, emphasizing that the attached units would clash with the character of the area. Concerns were also raised about property values and the overall quality of life for current residents.
Deborah Macgard, representing concerned citizens from the Foxland Harbor Arena project, echoed these sentiments, urging council members to reconsider the implications of such a significant zoning change. The meeting underscored the community's desire for thoughtful development that aligns with existing residential standards and preserves neighborhood integrity.
