Mayor Israel Chavez promotes historic preservation in Las Cruces

During the Las Cruces City Council meeting on May 5, 2025, a passionate plea for historic preservation was made by resident Israel Chavez, who emphasized the need for the city to recognize and promote its historic districts as valuable assets rather than burdens. Chavez, a lifelong resident, highlighted the rich history of areas like Mesquite Street, which includes significant sites such as one of the first Black schools in New Mexico.

Chavez expressed concern that many historic buildings, including those owned by the city, remain abandoned and neglected. He urged the council to take action to restore these structures and invest in their preservation, particularly adobe buildings, which he described as an endangered architectural style in the city. He noted that the city has a responsibility to learn from past mistakes, particularly regarding the treatment of historically marginalized communities.

To foster community engagement and awareness, Chavez announced a walking tour of the historic neighborhood, scheduled for May 10, 2025, from 2 to 4 PM, starting at Klein Park. The tour, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, aims to educate residents about the area's history and encourage participation in its preservation.

Chavez concluded his remarks by calling on the city to actively promote its historic districts and invest in their future, reinforcing the importance of understanding and preserving the community's history for generations to come.
