Amador Hotel Foundation requests clarity on old post office's future

The future of the historic old post office in Las Cruces is in jeopardy as the City Council considers rescinding a resolution that has designated the building as the site for a museum of art since 2009. During the May 5th council meeting, Greg Smith, vice president of the Amador Hotel Foundation, urged council members to remove resolution number 25 1 21 from the consent agenda, emphasizing the need for public discussion regarding the building's fate.

Smith expressed concern over the lack of clarity surrounding the old post office, which has significant historical value and is one of the few structures to survive urban renewal. He highlighted that the community deserves to know what plans, if any, are in place for the building's adaptive reuse or restoration. "We had expected that it would be renovated and restored," Smith stated, urging the council to provide transparency about the future of this landmark.

Additionally, Smith pointed out that the north end of the old post office has been used as storage for the Amador Hotel's original holdings for over a decade, raising further questions about the building's current and future use. He called for a discussion that would clarify the city’s intentions regarding the historic site.
