During the recent Avondale City Council meeting on May 5, 2025, the council highlighted the importance of water safety as they proclaimed May as National Water Safety Month. The presentation, led by Bridal, the new Recreation Manager, emphasized the upcoming activities and programs at the Avondale Aquatic Center aimed at promoting safe swimming practices.
As the summer season approaches, the Aquatic Center will expand its operations to seven days a week starting May 24, offering a variety of programs including swim lessons for all ages, adult fitness classes, and unique events like paddleboard yoga. The center will also host "dive-in movies," featuring popular films such as "Top Gun Maverick" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," encouraging community engagement through themed events.
Bridal stressed the significance of water safety education, urging residents to practice the "ABCs" of water safety: Adult supervision, barriers to prevent access to water, and classes for swimming and CPR. The Aquatic Center plans to collaborate with the Avondale Fire Department to offer CPR classes this summer, further enhancing community preparedness.
Council members expressed support for these initiatives, with Councilman White raising concerns about identifying non-swimmers to ensure their safety. Bridal assured that life jackets are available for free at the Aquatic Center and that signage promotes safety measures for young children.
The proclamation serves as a reminder of the vital role that swimming and aquatic activities play in community health and well-being. The council urged all residents to participate in promoting water safety awareness, reinforcing the importance of education and vigilance around water activities.
As the city gears up for a busy summer, the focus on water safety is expected to foster a safer environment for families and individuals enjoying the Aquatic Center's offerings. The council's commitment to these initiatives reflects a proactive approach to community health and safety as the warmer months approach.
