Chino Valley awarded top prize for innovative 2040 General Plan

Chino Valley is celebrating a significant achievement following the recent announcement that the town's 2040 General Plan has won the top prize in a statewide competition for communities with populations under 49,000. This recognition highlights the plan's innovative approach to community development, emphasizing public engagement and sustainable growth.

During the Chino Valley Town Council meeting on September 24, 2024, Development Services Director Lori Lineberry shared details about the award, which was presented at the annual Arizona planners' conference. The General Plan, ratified by voters in November 2023, was praised for its comprehensive public outreach efforts, including focus group interviews and interactive open houses. These initiatives ensured that community input was central to the planning process.

The plan introduces the concept of "activity nodes," a strategic shift from traditional commercial development patterns. This approach aims to enhance economic opportunities while preserving the town's unique history and natural beauty. A key feature of the plan is the Old Home Manor area, a 200-acre site that will cater to diverse community needs.

The General Plan has already spurred transformative developments, including the creation of Del Rio Springs State Park, a 740-acre area dedicated to ecological and historical preservation. The town is also working on a water master plan and updating zoning ordinances to align with the General Plan's goals.

In addition to the award announcement, the meeting included discussions about upcoming community events, such as a fall festival featuring hayrides, a tractor show, and food trucks, which will foster community engagement and celebrate local culture.
