During the recent City Commission Budget Workshop held on May 3, 2025, in Deltona, significant discussions centered around addressing flooding issues and improving transportation infrastructure, particularly on El Cam Boulevard. City officials highlighted the need for targeted improvements in areas that have historically faced flooding challenges, especially after recent storms.
Public Works representative Phyllis Wallace outlined two key sections of El Cam that have been submitted for consideration to the Department of Environmental Management (DEM). These sections, located between Montecito and Van Allen, as well as near Oneida Court, have been problematic during heavy rains, causing detours that can extend travel times by up to nine miles. The proposed improvements aim to alleviate these flooding issues and enhance accessibility for residents.
The conversation also touched on the potential for constructing a new bridge on El Cam, which would require property acquisition for proper access. While officials acknowledged that a more elaborate bridge design could be costly, they emphasized the importance of a functional structure that includes sidewalks for pedestrian safety.
In addition to El Cam, the workshop included discussions about other transportation projects, such as improvements on Catalina Boulevard and the Rhode Island Extension. Maps were presented to visually represent the locations of these projects, helping residents understand where enhancements will take place.
The outcomes of this workshop reflect the city’s commitment to addressing infrastructure needs and improving the quality of life for Deltona residents. As the city moves forward with these plans, community members can expect updates on the progress and potential impacts of these vital projects.
