Road safety took center stage at the recent Open Space Committee meeting in Hubbardston, Massachusetts, as members voiced concerns over hazardous connector roads in the area. The discussion highlighted the dangers posed by roads like New Templeton and Lombard, which are frequented by cyclists and equestrians but lack adequate safety measures.
Committee members pointed out that many of these roads have steep drop-offs and guardrails that could pose serious risks to users. "New Templeton is even narrower with more hazards," one member noted, emphasizing the need for improved safety features. The conversation also touched on the speed limits on these roads, with concerns that the absence of posted limits could lead to dangerous driving conditions.
Lombard Road, recently repaved, has become a popular route for cyclists and horse riders, but safety remains a pressing issue. "If two cars are going 40 miles per hour, and one is speeding, you could have an 80-mile-per-hour enclosure," a member warned, underscoring the potential for accidents.
In addition to road safety, the committee discussed the completion of controlled burns at the Hidden Meadow Preserve, which will enhance the area for visitors this summer. The next meeting is scheduled for May 29, where members anticipate updates on several key issues, including a sandpit proposal and trail developments.
The discussions reflect a growing awareness of the need for safer roads and better management of local natural resources, as the community seeks to balance recreational use with safety and environmental stewardship.
