The Maui County Council convened on May 2, 2025, for a regular meeting, where a significant resolution was introduced to honor the late civic leader, Jonathan Starr. The meeting began with the presentation of Resolution 25 1 0 2, which extends condolences to Starr's family and friends following his passing on March 5, 2025.
Vice Chair Sugimura moved to adopt the resolution, which was seconded by Pro Tem. During the discussion, Sugimura requested that the clerk read the resolution in its entirety. The reading highlighted Starr's extensive contributions to Maui County, noting his involvement with various state, county, and community boards, commissions, and organizations.
Starr, a long-time resident of Maui, was recognized not only for his civic engagement but also for his diverse interests and talents, including being a licensed pilot, boat captain, amateur radio operator, beekeeper, woodworker, photographer, amateur historian, and bass player. Born on March 15, 1951, in New York City, he came from a family known for creating iconic electric signs in Times Square. His life journey included hitchhiking across the United States, spending seven years at the Bihar School of Yoga in India, and living in Kenya before returning to New York to manage the family business. He first visited Maui in the 1960s and eventually made it his home in 1994.
The council's resolution serves as a formal acknowledgment of Starr's legacy and contributions to the community, reflecting the deep respect and admiration held for him by those who knew him. The meeting concluded with a commitment to honor his memory and contributions to Maui County.
