The Southborough Library Board of Trustees has announced plans to install a new electric vehicle (EV) charger in the library's upper parking lot, a move aimed at promoting green initiatives within the community. The charger will feature two ports, allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously, and will occupy one of three existing parking spaces, reducing the total to two.
John, a board member, emphasized that the installation is part of a broader commitment to sustainability, noting that the project is funded through National Grid incentives, amounting to over $122,000 at no cost to the town. He reassured residents concerned about parking space loss, stating that the charger can also serve as a regular parking spot when not in use.
The charger will be located adjacent to the new park, ensuring easy access for library visitors. It is designed to be compact, standing approximately six feet tall and 33 inches wide. Users will pay for charging via credit card, with fees going directly to the town, as free energy cannot be provided.
Maintenance of the charger will be the town's responsibility, alleviating any financial burden on the library. The board anticipates that the fast-charging capabilities of the unit will minimize the time vehicles spend parked, addressing concerns about potential congestion from users, particularly parents from nearby Saint Mark's School.
This initiative not only enhances the library's commitment to environmental sustainability but also aims to meet the growing demand for EV infrastructure in Southborough.
