Officers Gurkens and Webb assist homeless man in finding shelter during extreme cold

On December 4, 2024, the officers responded to a call from a man named Dustin, who was seeking emergency shelter due to the harsh weather conditions. At the time, temperatures were in the low thirties, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Dustin, who had been sober for ten days, expressed his need for a safe place to stay and a desire to connect with a recovery center the following day.

Despite efforts to locate nearby shelters, the officers found no available options. Concerned for Dustin's well-being, particularly given his inadequate clothing for the weather, Officer Gerkins took the initiative to contact the Royal Motel. After confirming room availability, he purchased a night’s stay for Dustin, emphasizing the importance of not taking this assistance for granted.

In addition to securing shelter, Officer Webb provided Dustin with food and encouraged him to utilize the motel's resources to reach out to recovery centers. This act of compassion not only addressed immediate needs but also aimed to support Dustin's long-term recovery journey.
