Pender EMS Chief discusses fire and medical response efficiency improvements

Pender County's emergency services are set to enhance their response capabilities following a recent budget work session held by the Board of Commissioners. During the meeting, Chief of Pender EMS and Fire highlighted the agency's current staffing and operational status, emphasizing the critical role of both paid and volunteer firefighters in maintaining efficient emergency response times.

The department currently operates with three full-time firefighters available 24/7, supplemented by a Quick Response Vehicle (QRV) that ensures rapid medical assistance. Chief noted that the average response time for both medical and fire emergencies is under seven minutes, a significant achievement that underscores the department's commitment to public safety.

The Chief also addressed the importance of maintaining a strong ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating, which currently stands at a Class 4. This rating reflects the department's effectiveness in fire suppression and emergency response, a notable improvement from previous ratings that were as high as Class 9. The Chief expressed pride in this progress, indicating that it enhances community safety and potentially lowers insurance costs for residents.

In addition to discussing staffing and response times, the meeting included inquiries about mutual aid agreements with neighboring agencies, ensuring that Pender EMS and Fire can effectively collaborate during emergencies. The Chief confirmed that they often work alongside Union County's EMS, particularly when their resources are stretched.
