San Antonio's Building Standards Board took decisive action during its May 1, 2025, meeting, approving a motion to demolish a property deemed a public nuisance. The board unanimously voted to demolish the structure located at 1538 West Craig Place within 30 days, following a motion that highlighted multiple violations of city code. The property will also be secured and cleared of trash and debris as part of the order.
The motion, made by board member Robert Tapia, was seconded and included a friendly amendment to cut all utilities to the property before demolition. The board's swift action reflects ongoing efforts to address unsafe and unsightly properties in the community, ensuring compliance with city regulations.
In addition to the demolition decision, the meeting addressed changes in board membership. Judy Crum from Development Services announced the resignation of board member Thomas Franks, who is pursuing opportunities outside the city. The board has received 11 applications to fill the vacancy, with the current term ending on May 31, 2025. Members will remain in a holdover status until new appointments are made.
The meeting also noted the issuance of the 2024 San Antonio Property Maintenance Code (SAPMC) books, which went into effect immediately, signaling updates to local property maintenance standards.
As the board continues to tackle property issues, the community can expect further discussions and actions aimed at maintaining safety and aesthetic standards in San Antonio neighborhoods. The next meeting is scheduled for May 15, where additional matters, including a certificate presentation to Mr. Franks, will be addressed.
