Midland Public Schools celebrates music program achievements and prepares for facilities bond vote

During the recent Board of Education Budget Workshop and Regular Meeting held on April 21, 2025, Midland Public Schools highlighted significant achievements in its music program while also preparing for an upcoming facilities improvement bond proposal.

The meeting opened with a presentation showcasing the accomplishments of the district's music students and faculty. Notably, the Dow High Orchestras and Choirs recently performed in Prague, marking a high point in their year. The district celebrated the recognition of various small ensembles, which were named best in the state by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. This year, 12 students earned spots in the Michigan All State honors bands and orchestras, a commendable achievement despite a slight decrease from previous years.

The Sutton Foster Awards, a prestigious recognition in musical theater, also featured prominently in the discussion. The district's students have consistently received nominations, with former student Gretchen Shok winning the award last year and subsequently the Jimmy Awards, akin to a Tony Award for high school students. Additionally, Mia, a current student, received the Interlochen Orchestral Scholar Award, which provides a full scholarship to the renowned arts camp.

The meeting underscored the importance of the music program beyond just musical education. Board members emphasized how the program fosters leadership, historical knowledge, and a sense of belonging among students, regardless of their musical talent. This inclusive environment was praised as a vital aspect of the program's success.

In addition to celebrating musical achievements, the board provided an update on the Facilities Improvement Bond Proposal, which is set to go before voters on May 6. This proposal has been in development for two years, and the board is eager to gather community input on the planned improvements.
