UPO expands community programs with new computer lab and mentoring initiatives for seniors

A new computer lab at the United Planning Organization (UPO) Senior Building is making waves in the District of Columbia, providing essential skills and support to local seniors. The lab, which accommodates seven individuals at a time, offers a variety of classes including computer literacy, financial literacy, behavioral health, and leadership programs. This initiative aims to empower seniors and enhance their quality of life through education and community engagement.

During a recent oversight roundtable led by Chairperson Matthew Frumin, UPO representatives highlighted the success of their programs, which also include tutoring and mentoring for children with special needs. One notable participant, Ms. Morgan, shared her journey as a foster grandparent, emphasizing the importance of patience and dedication in her role. She has been actively involved in mentoring children diagnosed with autism, showcasing the profound impact of community service on both the volunteers and the youth they support.

UPO President and CEO Andrea Thomas addressed the committee, detailing how the organization has utilized Community Services Block Grant funds to foster economic security among residents. With over 62 years of service, UPO continues to implement innovative strategies to alleviate poverty and promote education and employment opportunities.

The meeting underscored the vital role of community organizations in addressing local needs and fostering resilience among vulnerable populations. As UPO expands its offerings, the hope is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents in Washington, D.C.
