Animal welfare took center stage at the Hidalgo County Commissioner’s Court meeting on April 29, 2025, as officials recognized the vital contributions of animal control officers and celebrated the success of a recent spay and neuter clinic.
Jennifer Alvarez, supervisor of animal control, expressed gratitude for the proclamation honoring the hard work of her team, who respond to over a hundred calls daily. "It takes a village," she emphasized, highlighting the community's support in addressing the urgent issue of pet overpopulation.
The meeting also featured students from Donna North High School, who, alongside Texas Humane Leaders and Network Junior Advocates, advocated for a dedicated day to appreciate animal control officers. They shared their experience from a recent clinic that provided spaying, neutering, vaccinating, and microchipping services to over 70 families in just one weekend. "We had cars lined down Valverde Road," one student noted, underscoring the community's demand for these essential services.
Commissioner Fuentes praised the students for their initiative and collaboration with Yaqui Animal Rescue Services, which has been instrumental in addressing the local animal population crisis. "Together, we can help control that population in the future," he stated, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in animal welfare.
The meeting concluded with a call to action for continued support of local animal rescue efforts, emphasizing that the fight against overpopulation and the need for animal care is far from over.
