The April meeting of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education was a vibrant celebration of student achievement, honoring exceptional scholars, educators, and community members. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Azaria Curtin as the Student of the Month. A senior at Northern High School, Azaria has demonstrated remarkable dedication and compassion, inspired by her father's teachings on empathy. She plans to pursue a degree in kinesiology at North Carolina Central University, with aspirations of opening a private physical therapy practice.

Azaria's accomplishments extend beyond academics; she has actively participated in student government and the prom committee, showcasing her leadership skills. Her journey has not been without challenges, including relocating from Arizona and adapting to a new school environment. However, her resilience has shone through, making her a proud first-generation college student.

In addition to her accolades, Azaria received a $500 gift card from the Durham Public Schools Foundation, along with a laptop to support her future studies. The evening also honored Jakyra Scott as the Alumni of the Month. A graduate of Southern High School, Jakyra has dedicated 20 years to education at Hillside High School, where she has made significant contributions as a special education teacher and coordinator.

The meeting also celebrated the achievements of the Battle of the Books participants, with 39 schools competing in this literacy enrichment program. Notably, the Durham School of the Arts high school team emerged as champions, set to compete in the state competition later this month.

These recognitions not only highlight individual accomplishments but also reflect the strong community support and commitment to fostering educational excellence within Durham Public Schools.
