Durham Public Schools (DPS) celebrated significant achievements and community engagement during its monthly Board of Education meeting on April 24, 2025. A highlight of the evening was the recognition of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council, whose members provided valuable insights on various educational issues throughout the year. Their contributions included feedback on graduation policy revisions, budget priorities, and the implementation of restorative practices, showcasing their commitment to enhancing the educational experience for their peers.

The meeting also honored outstanding student athletes from Riverside High School, including Philip Bloom, who won multiple state championships in track and field, and Stephanie Diaz Mendoza, the first female state champion in wrestling from Riverside. In addition to student accomplishments, the board recognized April's Teacher and Employee of the Month. Caracas Jefferson, an eighth-grade teacher at Carrington Middle School, was celebrated for his transformative impact on students, while Priscilla Thompson, a student information system coordinator, was acknowledged for her unwavering support and positivity within the district.

The meeting further highlighted the achievements of Tyler DeAngelo, named the North Carolina Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year, for his innovative work in agricultural education at Jordan High School. DPS also celebrated the success of its media coordinators during School Library Month, with Sally Winstead from Creekside Elementary named Media Coordinator of the Year.
