Cobb School Board celebrates achievements in sports and academics including Wheeler basketball titles

The Cobb School Board held a work session on April 24, 2025, where several notable achievements were recognized, highlighting the accomplishments of students and teams across the district. The meeting began with a series of awards celebrating excellence in sports, academics, and leadership.

Among the highlights was the recognition of the Wheeler High School boys' basketball team, who secured their fourth state championship in six years, marking the school's tenth overall title. The team finished the season with an impressive record of 29 wins and 3 losses, ranking first in Georgia and seventh nationally. Head coach Larry Thompson and his coaching staff were present to celebrate this significant achievement.

Additionally, Max Lynn, a sixth grader from Dodgen Middle School, was honored for winning the Georgia State Math Counts competition. His success in mathematics was acknowledged alongside his coach and school principal, showcasing the district's commitment to academic excellence.

The meeting also recognized Estefani Valenzuela from the Cobb Innovation and Technology Academy, who won first place in clinical laboratory science at the Georgia HOSA State Leadership Conference. Her instructor and school administrators were present to celebrate her achievement.

Furthermore, the Lasseter High School speech and debate team was commended for their outstanding performance at the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Varsity State Championship, where they earned the state championship in speech and were named overall state runner-up. Coach Jonathan Waters received special recognition as the GFCA speech coach of the year.

These recognitions reflect the district's dedication to fostering talent and excellence among its students, with a strong emphasis on both academic and extracurricular achievements.
