The Winchester Public School Board convened on April 29, 2025, to discuss various initiatives aimed at enhancing student opportunities and community engagement. The meeting highlighted successful partnerships and proposed new programs that could significantly impact local students.
The session began with a presentation on the Shenandoah Valley Career Showcase, an event designed to connect students with local businesses and career opportunities in the trades. This year’s showcase, held on March 28, attracted 370 students from Winchester Public Schools and Frederick County Schools, along with 32 business partners. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with students expressing that the event made the real world feel "less scary." The showcase was made possible through the collaborative efforts of local businesses, particularly Beiler Construction, which also sponsored transportation for Frederick County students to attend.
Luis Marquez Cardoso, a former student who benefited from a work-based learning opportunity with Beiler Construction, was recognized for his journey from a carpentry class to a paid internship, and now a full-time job. His continued involvement with the school and support for current students was noted as a testament to the positive impact of such partnerships.
The board also discussed the SkillsUSA district competition, which Winchester hosted for the first time this year. The event showcased the skills of nine carpentry students, with winners advancing to the state level. Tyler and Brooke from Beiler Construction played a crucial role in organizing this competition, further demonstrating their commitment to student development.
In the public comment segment, Bob Ryan advocated for the establishment of a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program in Winchester Public Schools. He highlighted the absence of such programs in the surrounding counties and emphasized the prestige and benefits a JROTC program could bring to the school. Ryan shared personal experiences, noting that his son’s participation in JROTC led to a full scholarship and a successful military career.
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude towards community partners and a commitment to continue fostering relationships that enhance educational opportunities for students. The board acknowledged the importance of these collaborations in shaping the future of Winchester’s youth.
