Carmel-by-the-Sea is gearing up for a significant milestone as the city’s wireless ordinance heads to the Coastal Commission’s agenda on May 8. This ordinance, praised for its robust protections of coastal resources, is the first of its kind in the region to receive a recommendation for approval without any modifications.
During the recent Friday Vlog meeting, city officials expressed pride in the ordinance's strength, noting that it stands out among similar regulations in nearby areas, which often required changes to meet coastal protection standards. “Our ordinance is by far the most protective of the coastal resources that they've seen in our region,” one council member stated, highlighting the collaborative efforts of city staff and community members in crafting the legislation.
The meeting also touched on the ongoing litigation with Verizon, which remains on hold as the city finalizes its regulations. Officials confirmed that no new applications from telecommunications providers have been submitted since the ordinance was adopted, aside from one approved request last year.
In addition to the wireless ordinance discussion, the meeting included a reminder about the upcoming Earth Day celebration at Devendorf Park this weekend, combining festivities with Arbor Day activities. Residents are encouraged to participate in various volunteer opportunities and enjoy the community spirit.
As the city prepares for the Coastal Commission meeting, officials are optimistic about the ordinance's future, emphasizing the importance of public engagement and the potential for a positive outcome.
