Bilingualism took center stage at the Gadsden Independent Schools District (GISD) Board Meeting on April 26, 2025, as the district celebrated the achievements of 187 students who earned the New Mexico State Seal of Bilingualism and Biliteracy. The event highlighted the importance of bilingual education and recognized the contributions of local organizations that supported these students.
Superintendent Dempsey opened the recognition ceremony by expressing gratitude to Curtis Gomez, Jerry Pacheco from the Santa Teresa Charitable Foundation, and the founders of Everest Analytics. Their generous donations enabled each recipient to receive a $25 Walmart gift card, reinforcing the district's commitment to promoting bilingualism among students.
The ceremony featured the names of students from various schools, including Alta Vista Early College High School, Desert Pride Academy, and Santa Teresa High School, who were called forward to receive their awards. Notably, Santa Teresa High School had the highest number of bilingual seal recipients, showcasing the school's dedication to fostering bilingual education.
In addition to the awards, Superintendent Dempsey emphasized the significant achievements of the district, noting that three schools—Alta Vista, Gadsden High School, and Santa Teresa High School—ranked among the top ten for graduation rates in New Mexico. Desert Pride Academy also stood out as the only alternative school in the state with a 65% graduation rate, marking a significant milestone for alternative education.
The meeting concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the support from parents, teachers, and school leaders, underscoring the collaborative effort that has led to these remarkable accomplishments. The celebration of bilingualism not only honors the students' hard work but also highlights the district's ongoing commitment to educational excellence and community support.
