In a vibrant gathering at Derby Public Schools, community members and educators came together to celebrate achievements and discuss future initiatives. The evening was marked by heartfelt acknowledgments of staff contributions, setting a positive tone for the meeting.
Janet Sprucker, chair of the Derby Education Foundation (DEF), took the stage to share exciting updates about the foundation's recent activities. This spring, the DEF awarded four classroom grants to dedicated teachers, including Paula Hunter Vanley from El Paso Elementary and Molly Will from Sweeny Elementary. These grants aim to enhance educational experiences and provide essential resources for students.
Sprucker highlighted the DEF's commitment to recognizing hard work through the Staff Showcase Awards, which honor outstanding staff members throughout the year. The foundation's fundraising efforts have also been fruitful, raising $13,000 last fall, thanks to generous local businesses and a special donation from OFG Financial Services, chosen by Kansas Superintendent finalist Mrs. Mahady.
Looking ahead, the DEF is gearing up for its second annual pickleball tournament, scheduled for June at the Sandbox in Derby. This event promises to be a fun-filled day for players of all ages, with opportunities for sponsorship still available. Sprucker encouraged community members to participate and support the foundation's mission to provide innovative educational opportunities for Derby students.
As the meeting transitioned to the consent agenda, the board approved various items, including a donation to Sweeny Elementary and travel requests for Derby High School. Burke Jones, the director of operations, humorously noted that his department handles everything but teaching, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that drives the district forward.
The evening concluded with a sense of community pride and anticipation for the future, as Derby Public Schools continues to foster an environment where both educators and students can thrive.
