The Transportation Coordinating Committee convened on August 17, 2023, to discuss several significant bridge projects in Wasatch County and surrounding areas, focusing on funding and local contributions for infrastructure improvements.
The meeting began with an overview of a bridge replacement project on a federal aid eligible facility, which will receive over $6.6 million in funding. Holiday City has agreed to provide a local match of approximately $480,000, bringing the total project cost to over $7.1 million.
Next, the committee reviewed the Haswell Structure project in Midvale City, also on a federal aid eligible facility. This project will be funded with $2.7 million from the Bridge Formula Program, complemented by a local match of $203,000 from Midvale, resulting in a total project cost of $3 million.
The discussion continued with a bridge replacement in Riverton City, located on 134 South over the Utah and Salt Lake Canal. This project, also on a federal aid eligible facility, will receive $2.2 million in Bridge Formula funds, with Riverton contributing over $162,000, totaling $2.4 million for the project.
In Salt Lake City, a bridge on Fifth South over the Jordan River, which is not on the federal aid eligible system, will be fully funded by the Bridge Formula Program at an estimated cost of $7.4 million.
The committee highlighted that many of these projects are expected to return surplus funds, which could be redirected to other eligible projects under the Bridge Formula Program.
Further discussions included a bridge replacement project near Huntsville, emphasizing UDOT's commitment to assist local governments with bridge projects, even those not classified as federal aid eligible. The criteria for federal aid eligibility were clarified, noting that roads classified as minor collectors, major collectors, or arterials qualify, while others do not.
The meeting concluded with a brief overview of additional bridge projects in Box Elder County, illustrating UDOT's ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure across various jurisdictions. The total funding for these projects reflects a collaborative approach to improving transportation safety and efficiency in the region.
