Arbor Day took center stage at the Staunton City Council meeting on April 24, 2025, as the council proclaimed April 25 as Arbor Day in the city. This year marks the 29th time Staunton has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, highlighting the city's commitment to urban forestry and environmental stewardship.

During the meeting, a special presentation celebrated the Stanton Legacy Tree Project, which successfully planted 2,746 trees across the city, including parks and schools. The initiative, inspired by former Mayor Carolyn Lehi's vision, aimed to plant one tree for every student in the Staunton City School District. Shenandoah Green, the organization leading the project, acknowledged the contributions of volunteers and donors, presenting a plaque to the city in gratitude for their support.

Additionally, the council recognized Matt Sensabaugh, the city horticulturist, with the 2025 Earth Hero award for his dedication to maintaining the city’s tree canopy and his involvement in various tree projects. The event coincided with the upcoming Earth Day celebrations, where residents were encouraged to participate in tree giveaways at Gypsy Hill Park.

In other business, the council approved a zoning amendment allowing florist shops as a special use in professional districts, paving the way for local business owner Melissa Swan to relocate her shop, Honeybees Florist, to a new location on North Augusta Street. The planning commission unanimously supported this change, emphasizing the importance of evaluating each request on a case-by-case basis to ensure compatibility with the surrounding area.
