Laramie County School District honors finalists for prestigious presidential teaching award

The Laramie County School District 1 Board of Trustees meeting on April 21, 2025, celebrated the achievements of two exceptional educators nominated for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The meeting highlighted the contributions of finalists Julie Grant from Central High School and Jennifer Merriam from East High School, both recognized for their outstanding impact on students and the educational community.

Math coordinator Amy Castle and science coordinator Julie Calkins introduced the finalists, emphasizing the rigorous selection process that led to their nominations. The award is the highest honor for K-12 educators in STEM fields, and Laramie County School District 1 is proud to have two of the four state finalists advancing to the national level.

Jennifer Merriam was praised for her dedication to science education and her active role in shaping curriculum across the district. She has developed high-quality chemistry assessments and will represent the district at the statewide celebration of learning in Riverton. Her commitment to education and student success was highlighted as a key factor in her nomination.

Julie Grant, with 35 years of teaching experience, was recognized for her significant contributions to the Cheyenne community and her mentorship of fellow educators. Her principal, Dr. Karen Delbridge, spoke about Grant's dedication to her students and her involvement in community events, underscoring her role as a true professional in education.

Both finalists expressed gratitude for the recognition and support from their colleagues and families. The meeting concluded with a call for community support for these educators as they move forward in the award process, showcasing the district's commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.
