Newark city officials have outlined an ambitious plan for street improvements in 2025, focusing on a significant project along Thornton Avenue. During the recent City Council meeting, city representatives presented a detailed map showcasing the planned slurry seal and overlay projects, with Thornton Avenue highlighted as a key area for development.

The Thornton Avenue project will unfold in two phases. Phase 1 will cover the stretch from Highway 880 to Olive Street, while Phase 2 will extend from Ash Street to Spruce Street. This initiative is set to coincide with a major waterline replacement project by the Alameda County Water District, expected to conclude by December 2025 or early spring 2026, depending on any unforeseen challenges.

Funding for these improvements has been bolstered by a significant contribution from Congressman Ro Khanna, who secured $2 million for Phase 1 and $1 million for Phase 2 through community project funding. This financial support is crucial as the city also adheres to the American Disabilities Act, which mandates the installation of curb ramps during street upgrades.

City officials detailed the various funding sources that will support these infrastructure projects. The primary funding comes from the state gas tax, local sales tax through the Alameda County Transportation Commission, and vehicle registration fees. Additionally, the SB 1 tax, enacted in 2017, will further aid in financing transportation infrastructure.
