During the recent budget hearings in Los Angeles, community advocates urged city leaders to prioritize funding for transgender, gender-expansive, and intersex (TGI) initiatives. Byron Jose from the Transatina Coalition highlighted the ongoing lack of dedicated budget line items for TGI wellness and equity, despite years of discussions with the mayor's office and city council members.
Jose called on policymakers to not only support but actively champion the TGI wellness initiative, which has been progressing at the county level. He emphasized the need for a formal directive to ensure that the city allocates necessary resources to support these communities.
Additionally, Rafael Molina, a member of Central Laredos de Carisen, shared his personal experience of receiving support from local services, underscoring the importance of continued funding for community programs that assist families in need.
The discussions reflect a growing demand for inclusive budgeting that addresses the needs of marginalized communities in Los Angeles. As the city moves forward with its budget planning, advocates are hopeful that their calls for action will lead to tangible support for TGI initiatives and other vital community services.
