The Flagstaff Commission on Diversity Awareness (CODA) convened on April 16, 2025, to discuss critical initiatives aimed at enhancing community inclusivity and sustainability. A significant focus of the meeting was on transportation and infrastructure, particularly regarding the introduction of bike and scooter rentals. Commission members emphasized the importance of considering individuals with varying abilities, ensuring that any new transportation options are accessible to all residents, including the elderly and those with disabilities.
The discussion highlighted the need for safe infrastructure to support these transportation methods, acknowledging that while some cities have attempted similar programs, success has varied. The commission expressed a commitment to inclusivity, aiming to create a city that accommodates everyone.
In addition to transportation, the meeting featured a presentation on the Land Availability and Suitability Study, part of a broader initiative to address housing and climate emergencies in Flagstaff. The project, known as LastCap, seeks to identify barriers within city codes that hinder housing development and climate goals. The housing planning manager outlined the dual objectives of increasing affordable housing and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
The LastCap project has identified approximately 50 opportunity sites for residential development, including both city-owned and privately held properties. The commission is currently in the process of gathering community feedback on proposed code amendments that could facilitate housing production and promote greener infrastructure.
Looking ahead, the commission plans to hold a community conversation in June to engage residents in discussions about key decision points related to housing and climate strategies. This outreach aims to ensure that the community's voice is heard in shaping the future of Flagstaff's development and sustainability efforts.
As the commission continues its work, it remains focused on fostering an inclusive environment and addressing pressing community needs through thoughtful planning and collaboration.
