The Flagstaff Commission on Diversity Awareness is gearing up for an exciting May meeting, focusing on enhancing community engagement through bilingual and multilingual story time initiatives. During the April 16 meeting, a new partnership with the library was announced, aiming to support programs in Spanish, Navajo, and American Sign Language (ASL). "I'm super excited to keep that work moving forward," said a commissioner, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in storytelling.
In addition to the library collaboration, the commission is also preparing for participation in the upcoming Pride Parade. The group received an invitation to join the festivities, with discussions underway about whether to have a booth or simply participate in the parade. "I think the participation in the parade is definitely better than the booth," one commissioner noted, emphasizing the need for a coordinated effort to secure a vehicle and banner for the event.
The meeting also touched on future agenda items, including a citywide anti-bullying policy and updates on transportation projects. The commission is eager to continue its work on these initiatives, with plans to gather community input through surveys and presentations.
As the commission looks ahead, the focus remains on fostering diversity and inclusion within the Flagstaff community, ensuring that all voices are heard and represented. The next meeting promises to build on these discussions, with a commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for all residents.
