This proclamation marks the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, a pivotal moment that led to the resettlement of many Vietnamese individuals and families in the United States, including Austin.

Council Member Chitavella, representing District 4, led the ceremony, expressing gratitude for the Vietnamese American community's enduring contributions to the city and the state of Texas. He acknowledged the efforts of community leaders, including Casey Lung and Chloe Chow Tran, who played vital roles in drafting the proclamation. The event featured speeches from prominent community members, including Hung Le and Dr. Nam Nguyen, who shared personal experiences and reflections on the community's journey.

The proclamation highlighted the sacrifices made by over three million service members during the Vietnam War and the subsequent challenges faced by more than one million Vietnamese refugees who fled their homeland. It emphasized the resilience of the Vietnamese American community, which now comprises over two million individuals in the U.S., making it the fourth largest Asian American ethnic group.

Economically, the Vietnamese American community significantly contributes to Austin, generating approximately $8.8 billion in labor income and $14.8 billion in added value in 2022. Beyond economic impact, the community enriches Austin's cultural landscape, with initiatives such as the establishment of the first Vietnamese American exhibit at the Austin History Center and various organizations supporting over 70,000 Vietnamese Americans in Central Texas.

The council's recognition of the Vietnamese American community underscores its commitment to inclusivity and cultural diversity in Austin.
