Moraga implements evacuation drills and smart traffic signals for improved emergency response

The Town of Moraga held an Emergency Preparedness Community Meeting on April 21, 2025, aimed at enhancing local readiness for potential emergencies, particularly wildfires. The meeting, led by town officials, focused on the importance of evacuation plans, community drills, and individual preparedness measures.

A key highlight was the town's established evacuation plan, which includes regular drills to test its effectiveness. Recently, a drill saw 27 participants evacuate their homes, providing valuable insights into traffic flow and emergency response. Officials noted issues with traffic signals during the drill, prompting discussions with the public works department to address these concerns. The drills not only prepare residents but also train police and firefighters in real-time decision-making during emergencies.

The meeting also introduced the Smart Signals Program, a collaborative initiative among the three Lamorinda cities, which aims to synchronize traffic signals across jurisdictions. This system will facilitate smoother evacuations by allowing traffic signals to turn green in the event of an emergency, thereby reducing congestion and improving safety.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, residents were encouraged to engage in home hardening practices to mitigate fire risks. This includes maintaining defensible space around homes, utilizing gutter covers, and participating in neighborhood clean-up efforts through the Moraga-Orinda Fire District's chipper program. The importance of having emergency "go bags" ready and knowing evacuation zones was emphasized, as was the need for families to communicate and practice their evacuation plans.

The town's officials urged residents to stay informed through the Community Warning System (CWS) and to register for alerts. They also highlighted the significance of community support, particularly for neighbors with special needs, to ensure everyone can evacuate safely.

As Moraga continues to prepare for potential emergencies, the town's proactive approach, including infrastructure upgrades and community engagement, aims to enhance safety and resilience among its residents.
