Marysville Exempted Village Schools is set to transition to a more sustainable transportation model by introducing propane-powered buses into its fleet. During the Board of Education meeting on April 17, 2025, officials discussed plans to add four propane buses in 2026, including two designated for special needs routes. This move aligns with the district's long-term strategy to phase out diesel buses, aiming for 75% of the fleet to run on propane over the next decade.

The decision to switch to propane is driven by several factors, including significant cost savings on fuel and maintenance. Currently, the district spends approximately $13,000 annually on diesel exhaust fluid for its diesel buses, which is not required for propane models. Propane buses are expected to have lower maintenance needs, with quicker diagnostics and repairs, reducing downtime and operational costs.

In terms of performance, propane buses are projected to achieve similar mileage to diesel buses, with around 400 miles per tank for in-town driving and 500 miles for longer trips. The initial purchase cost for propane buses is slightly lower than that of diesel buses, making them an attractive option for the district.

The district's mechanics are equipped to handle the maintenance of propane buses, ensuring a smooth transition. Additionally, propane is considered less flammable than diesel, alleviating safety concerns associated with the switch.

While the district plans to maintain a portion of diesel buses for longer trips where propane refueling may not be readily available, the overall strategy reflects a commitment to sustainability and efficiency in school transportation.
